Legalization of Various Alternative Academic Education options in Cyprus
We are a large group of likeminded parents that through this petition aim to institute as well as to safeguard any family unit (or) individual’s interest to seek better alternative academic education options for their children within the region of Cyprus, based on their personal interests and belief systems. We are living in unprecedented times, with a great lack of certainty, faith and security being echoed within the constructs of our communities with regards to the educational infrastructure in Cyprus.As Citizens of The World, of The Republic of Cyprus, parents and students alike, we believe in the power of freewill and our Human Right to exercise our freedom to adopt un-traditional education methods of teaching our children in a safe, unconditionally loving space, with support from the many resources accessible to us all.
The educational structure of Cyprus hasn’t changed for the last 25 years, but what has changed though are the pupils of this country; there are many more ethnic divergent families of different educational backgrounds, also there is a notable surge on all children, including those with additional needs. In addition, the Cyprus school system,is promoting an “inclusion” and “one size fits all” format, but there is an increased need to address the individual student’s social, mental and emotional needs, because each child has his own particularities and abilities. According to EU statistics, Cyprus has an education system with low effectiveness, one of the lowest literacy and effectiveness,therefore, taking another education route (other than standard school system) it is in the best educational interests of the children (ref. https://ec.europa.eu/cyprus/sites/default/files/et monitor-report-2019-cyprus_en.pdf pg 17, http://www.reporter.com.cy/local-news/article/719581/mia-karekla-treis-ypoyrgi-oi-aperges-i-ggafa-olkis-kai-to-pazl-ton-thranion ).
Furthermore, it is important to point out that in the past year many children across the world have been quite satisfactory educated outside the school walls with good parental support, and have even got ahead of where they would have been at school, as a result of Alternative Education methods and resources,and the removal of school stress. In the past parents have been shunned and looked down upon when they chose to step away from the only option that was given to them: to enroll their children in the public school system and to pay for private afternoon lessons to cover the gaps in the curriculum, a curriculum that should have been covered completely and satisfactory within the public-school realm. Indirectly, the existing school system forces a child to be in learning mode 6-7 hours /day while in physical school,physical schools that more often than not are failing to complete the given curriculums. This leaves no other option to a vast majority of parents but to pay for private afternoon lessons (frontistiria) that will ensure that their children have a chance of gaining the appropriate credentials to gain entry to universities or other higher educational establishments.
With the corona virus pandemic that broke out since the spring of 2020, schools closed and classes continued with distance learning (hybrid) which was not properly provided by all schools (since they are not adequately equipped with properly trained staff/ technology); a situation that gave many parents a great opportunity to understand and re-assess their child’s learning methods and skills development, leading them to the conclusion that a one-to-one focused and calm environment is the one which their child thrives in the most (ratings https://markinstyle.co.uk/homeschooling-statistics/ ).
With all the above in mind, and since the education of our children is our common goal with the Ministry’s of Education in Cyprus, and the traditional educational system does not serve all children the same in a manner that it should, we are kindly asking the Minister of Education to legalize alternative academic education options for our children, so that it will become an ongoing legal option in Cyprus, either from schools here, or from other internationally accredited institutions abroad (such as online schooling platforms, tutorial institutionsetc https://www.ixl.com/inspiration/learninghub?noredir=true https://eduww.net/ , https://www.homeschool.com/articles/overseas/ that use more diverse and creative ways of teaching the material, and their methods are often better tailored to the preferences/talents of each student, with emphasis made on creativity, thinking out of the box, building confidence, emotional and social intelligence and need for social interaction -outdoor activities, sports, hobbies, peer-age socialization etc).

Fortunately, we are shifting into a time where interest in alternative academic education has skyrocketed, families are supporting one another, educating one another, loving and accepting one another and these acts have never been so fundamental. Parents who take the time to give space for their children to flourish, allow their interests and curiosities of the world around them to drive their path of learning, and trust their children to gain knowledge organically, not only shows sheer devotion as a parent, but profound respect to the independence that they’re allowing for their child. There is so much to learn and experience in the world we live in, and no child should be limited with what knowledge can be achieved within the confines of a state-run classroom. The freedom and right to choose is essential for each and every child and their parents and no outside home source should ever dictate what truly is best for a child that is not their own.
In conclusion, we ask for support, receptive, compassionate understanding of the perspective of parents and children who wish to choose the path of alternative academic education methods at home. This is a wonderful opportunity to expand and show support to the body of people who make up The Republic of Cyprus.

Νομιμοποίηση διαφόρων επιλογών εναλλακτικής ακαδημαϊκής εκπαίδευσης στην Κύπρο
Είμαστε μια μεγάλη ομάδα γονέων και μέσω αυτής της αναφοράς στοχεύουμε να εγκαθιδρύσουμε και να διαφυλάξουμε το συμφέρον οποιασδήποτε οικογενειακής μονάδας (ή) ατόμου να αναζητήσει καλύτερες εναλλακτικές επιλογές ακαδημαϊκής εκπαίδευσης για τα παιδιά τους στην περιοχή της Κύπρου, με βάση τα προσωπικά τους συμφέροντα και συστήματα πεποιθήσεων. Ζούμε σε καιρούς άνευ προηγουμένου, με μεγάλη έλλειψη βεβαιότητας, πίστης και ασφάλειας να αντοιχει μέσα στις δομές της κοινωνίας μας σχετικά με την εκπαιδευτική υποδομή στην Κύπρο. Ως Πολίτες του Κόσμου, της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας, γονείς και μαθητές, πιστεύουμε στη δύναμη της ελευθερίας και του Ανθρώπινου Δικαιώματός μας να ασκήσουμε την ελευθερία μας στο να υιοθετήσουμε μη-παραδοσιακούς μεθόδους εκπαίδευσης για να διδαχτούν τα παιδιά μας σε έναν ασφαλή περιβάλλον, με άνευ όρους αγάπη, μάθηση και υποστήριξη από τους πολλούς πόρους στους οποίους έχουμε πρόσβαση όλοι.
Η εκπαιδευτική δομή της Κύπρου δεν έχει αλλάξει τα τελευταία 25 χρόνια, αλλά αυτό που έχει αλλάξει είναι οι μαθητές αυτής της χώρας. Υπάρχουν πολλές περισσότερες εθνικάαποκλίνουσες οικογένειες διαφορετικών εκπαιδευτικών υποβάθρων, επίσης υπάρχει μια αξιοσημείωτη αύξηση σε όλα τα παιδιά, συμπεριλαμβανομένων εκείνων με πρόσθετες ανάγκες. Επιπλέον, το σχολικό σύστημα της Κύπρου, προωθεί τη μορφή «ένταξης» και «ένα μέγεθος ταιριάζει σε όλους», αλλά υπάρχει αυξημένη ανάγκη αντιμετώπισης των κοινωνικών, ψυχικών και συναισθηματικών αναγκών του κάθε μαθητή, επειδή κάθε παιδί έχει τις δικές του ιδιαιτερότητεςκαι ικανότητες. Επιπλέον, είναι σημαντικό να επισημανθεί ότι τον τελευταίο χρόνο πολλά παιδιά σε όλο τον κόσμο έχουν εκπαιδευτεί αρκετά καλά έξω από το σχολείο με καλή γονική υποστήριξη και έχουν προχωρήσει πιο μπροστά από το πού θα ήταν αν πήγαιναν στο σχολείο, ως αποτέλεσμα των Εναλλακτικών Εκπαιδευτικών πηγών, καθώς και λόγω της έλλειψης σχολικού στρες. Στην Κύπρο, οι γονείς έχουν αγνοηθεί και υποτιμηθεί στο παρελθόν, όταν επέλεξαν να διαφωνήσουν με τη μόνη επιλογή που τους δόθηκε: δηλαδή να εγγράψουν τα παιδιά τους στο δημόσιο σχολικό σύστημα και να πληρώνουν απογευματινά φροντιστήρια για να καλύψουν μαθήματα σχετικά με την εκπαιδευτική ύλη, που κανονικά θα έπρεπε να καλύπτεται πλήρως στα δημόσια σχολεία. Βασικά, το πραγματικό σχολικό σύστημα αναγκάζει έμμεσα ένα παιδί να παραμείνει σε ένα εκπαιδευτικό χώρο 6-7 ώρες / ημέρα, ενώ τα σχολικά προγράμματα και η ύλη δεν καλύπτονται σωστά, επομένως η μεγάλη πλειοψηφία των γονέων καταλήγουν να πληρώνουν φροντιστήρια για να διασφαλίσουν ότι τα παιδιά τους παίρνουν τις κατάλληλες γνώσεις για είσοδο σεπανεπιστήμια.
Με την πανδημία του κορονωιούπου ξέσπασε από την άνοιξη του 2020, τα σχολεία έκλεισαν και τα μαθήματα συνεχίστηκαν με την εξ αποστάσεως εκπαίδευση (υβριδική) η οποία δεν παρέχεται σωστά από όλα τα σχολεία (καθώς δεν είναι επαρκώς εξοπλισμένα με κατάλληλα εκπαιδευμένο προσωπικό / τεχνολογία). Μια κατάσταση που έδωσε σε πολλούς γονείς μια μεγάλη ευκαιρία να κατανοήσουν και να επανεκτιμήσουν τις μεθόδους μάθησης και την ανάπτυξη δεξιοτήτων του παιδιού τους, οδηγώντας τους στο συμπέρασμα ότι το ένα-προς-ένα επικεντρωμένο και ήρεμο περιβάλλον είναι αυτό στο οποίο το παιδί τους ευδοκιμείπερισσότερο (αξιολογήσεις https://markinstyle.co.uk/homeschooling-statistics/
Λαμβάνοντας υπόψη όλα τα παραπάνω, και δεδομένου ότι η εκπαίδευση των παιδιών μας είναι κοινός μας στόχος με το Υπουργείο Παιδείας στην Κύπρο, και το παραδοσιακό εκπαιδευτικό σύστημα δεν εξυπηρετεί όλα τα παιδιά το ίδιο με τον τρόπο που θα έπρεπε, ζητάμε ευγενικά από τον Υπουργό Παιδείας όπως νομιμοποίησει την επιλογή εναλλακτικών μεθόδων ακαδημαϊκής εκπαίδευσης για τα παιδιά μας, έτσι ώστε αυτόνα γίνει μια συνεχής νόμιμη επιλογή στην Κύπρο, είτε από σχολεία εδώ, είτε από άλλα διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένα ιδρύματα στο εξωτερικό (όπως διαδικτυακές πλατφόρμες σχολικής εκπαίδευσης, εκπαιδευτικά ιδρύματα κ.λ.π. https: / /www.ixl.com/inspiration/learninghub?noredir=true …, https://eduww.net/ https://www.homeschool.com/articles/overseas/ που χρησιμοποιούν πιο διαφορετικούς και δημιουργικούς τρόπους διδασκαλίας του εκπαιδευτικού υλικού και οι μέθοδοι τους είναι συχνά καλύτερα προσαρμοσμένες στις προτιμήσεις / ταλέντα κάθε μαθητή, με έμφαση στη δημιουργικότητα, στο να σκέφτεται «έξω από το κουτί», στην οικοδόμηση εμπιστοσύνης, στη συναισθηματική και κοινωνική νοημοσύνη και στην ανάγκη κοινωνικής αλληλεπίδρασης- δραστηριότητες, αθλήματα, χόμπι, κοινωνικοποίηση από ομοτίμους κ.λ.π.

Ευτυχώς, στρεφόμαστε σε μια εποχή όπου το ενδιαφέρον για την εναλλακτική ακαδημαϊκή εκπαίδευση έχει ανέβει στα ύψη, οι οικογένειες αλληλοϋποστηρίζονται, εκπαιδεύουν η μια την άλλη, αγαπούν και δέχονται η μια την άλλη και αυτές οι πράξεις δεν ήταν ποτέ τόσο θεμελιώδεις. Οι γονείς που αφιερώνουν χρόνο για να δώσουν χώρο στα παιδιά τους να ανθίσουν, επιτρέπουν στα ενδιαφέροντά τους και την περιέργεια τους για τον κόσμο γύρω τους να κατευθύνουν την πορεία της μάθησής τους και εμπιστεύονται τα παιδιά τους να αποκτήσουν γνώση οργανικά, δείχνειόχι μόνο καθαρή αφοσίωση ως γονέις, αλλά βαθύ σεβασμό στην ανεξαρτησία που επιτρέπουν στο παιδί τους. Υπάρχουν πολλά να μάθουμε και να βιώσουμε στον κόσμο στον οποίο ζούμε, και κανένα παιδί δεν πρέπει να περιορίζεται με το ποιες γνώσεις μπορούν να επιτευχθούν εντός των ορίων μιας κρατικής τάξης. Η ελευθερία και το δικαίωμα επιλογής είναι απαραίτητα για κάθε παιδί και τους γονείς τους και καμία εξωτερική πηγή δεν πρέπει ποτέ να υπαγορεύει τι είναι πραγματικά καλύτερο για ένα παιδί που δεν είναι δικό του.
Εν κατακλείδι, ζητάμε υποστήριξη, δεκτική και συμπονετική κατανόηση της προοπτικής των γονέων και των παιδιών που επιθυμούν να επιλέξουν την πορεία των εναλλακτικών μεθόδων ακαδημαϊκής εκπαίδευσης στο σπίτι. Αυτή είναι μια εξαιρετική ευκαιρία να επεκταθείτε και να προσφέρετε υποστήριξη στο συλλογικό σώμα των ανθρώπων που απαρτίζουν την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία.
